Durban International Film Festival

Back to "what to do in Durban"

Whether you are a filmmaker seeking extra business or a networking opportunity, an aspirant filmmaker seeking to enter into this dynamic industry or just an enthusiast about films and filmmaking in general, the Durban International Film Festival will definitely satisfy your every whim and need. The Festival is a valuable meeting place for filmmakers and industry personnel, and the forging of new partnerships necessary for the development and cohesive emergence of the film industry in Kwazulu-Natal. The main aim and challenge of the Durban International Film Festival is to introduce new talent in the film industry, be the incubator for the development of these emerging talents and to showcase brilliant filmmaking.

The identity of the Durban International Film Festival, organised by the Centre for Creative Hearts is centred on the exploration and celebration of diverse cultures. Exposure to other cultures enriches one’s life experience and increases one’s humanity. But sadly, the recent outbreak of Xenophobic attacks in South Africa do display how fragile the interface between different cultures can be. Though the root of these attacks lie in several other places and the Durban International Film Festival are unable to solve these problems; the medium of film is a multi-dimensional tool that will help one gain insight into other cultures. The films shown at the Festival allow a migration of the mind, is the first step towards tolerance, understanding and improving relationships with other cultures. The Festival displays a wide range of selected, issue-based films that will help people to journey into a world of conscientisation, reflective imagination and inspiration.

At the Durban International Film Festival 2008, there were films presented from 95 countries most of which have not been on circuit. The entire Festival displayed 11 South African feature films, 26 documentaries and 25 short films.
