Mr. Price Pro 2009

Formerly known as the Gunston 500, Mr. Price Pro is one of the world’s longest running international surfing competitions. The six star Mr. Price Pro surfs off on 29 June 2009 at New Pier, Durban’s foremost performance wave.

Moving the venue of Mr. Price Pro is not something new. This world-renowned surfing competition first started at the Old Bay of Plenty but after the Bay’s groyne piers were replaced in the 1980’s by its current piers the surfing event was moved a couple of hundred meters south to Durban’s famous North Beach. For almost all of the surfing competition’s history North Beach has been the chief venue – until today.

New Pier is a high quality wave and is most popular under the top surfers of Durban who surf there every day. One thing is true; the South African surfers will definitely have an advantage over the international surfers also competing in this competition. Ricky Basnett, the reigning Mr. Price Pro champion had the following to say about the relocation of the venue: “I am excited and going back out there to win this year and surfing at New Pier will definitely be to my advantage.” So watch out surfers, this man is prepared to take winning position again this year!

The Mr. Price Pro runs over a period of 10 days and boasts a massive prize winning of US$125 000, about R1.75 million as well as 3 000 valuable WQS points.
