The Splashy Fen Music Festival was formed in 1990 and has been the longest running music festival ever since. This five day music festival takes places outdoors and is said to be the ultimate outdoor experience. What could then be better than listening to some of the country’s top music artists, whilst being entertained by various outdoor activities, walking through the arts and crafts market and enjoying the wide variety of delicious food and snacks provided by the multiple food and drink stalls whilst the experiencing the vibe of live music? Nothing could be better. You don’t even have to worry about leaving the kids at home because there ample activities and entertainment lined up for the children. For those who would like to stay over; the grounds are facilitated with camping facilities as well as a giant tent hotel.
The festival is held on the farm, Splashy Fen, which is only 19 kilometers from Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains. If you don’t want to stay at the festival you can easily book your accommodation in this region of the Drakensberg Mountains and simply go in as a day visitor.
Alternatively if you only want to go to the festival for a day or two and spend the remainder of your stay in Kwazulu-Natal at the beach you can also do that. Some of Durban’s most popular beaches are only a two to three hour drive from Splashy Fen farm.
Music genres at Splashy Fen Music Festival
In the early years the main type of music to be performed at the festival was folk and light folk rock as well as certain black music styles such as mbaqanga and iscathamiya. However in the past years the focus has changed somewhat to include music genres such as alternative rock, pop and mainstream. Some of the country’s most popular current acts can be found at the festival. Splashy Fen is unique in the sense that only original music is played contributing to the fusion of styles and cultures that are present there. Splashy Fen Music Festival has played a huge part in shaping the authentic, South African contemporary music culture.
