Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon 2010

Yes, it’s that time again. The great Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon, previously known as the Dusi Canoe Marathon, is happening at the end of January and that’s around the corner.
This amazingly challenging race that runs along the Msunduzi River (better known as the Dusi River) is kicking off in Pietermaritzburg on 21 January and finishes in Durban on 23 January.
The famous Dusi Canoe Marathon was raced for the first time on 22 December 1951, with only eight guys participating. Ian Player, brother of the famous golfer Gary Player, was the only one to finish and it took him six days.
Since then, the race has been cut down to take place over three days and more than 2000 paddlers participate every year. Over 15 countries will be represented and the event gets covered by worldwide media as contestants paddle it out against each other for the adventure of a lifetime.
One of the new hi-tech features of the race is a GPS system that will be put in top paddlers boats. This system will be able to track the positions of paddlers via satellite and big screens will be placed at overnight stops where you can watch the contestants live.
The Hansa Powerade Dusi is also the largest canoe marathon in the world and attracts over R30 million to the regions economy. Instead of dishing all the cash out to contestants, the marathon donates plenty of it to charity. Last year, a total of R347 000 was raised for the various charities that the race supports.
