Durban, the third largest capital in South Africa, but also one of the most popular beach holiday destinations because of it warm and tropical climate all year round, beautiful sandy beaches, ocean temperatures ranging between 16˚C and 25˚C all year round. Thousands of holidaymakers travel to Kwazulu-Natal year after year to enjoy a beach holiday at the many beaches stretched all along the North and South Coast line. Durban itself, the capital of Kwazulu-Natal, boasts with three very popular beaches and is very popular under both South African holiday makers and tourists from abroad.
South Beach
This is probably the most popular beach in Durban with its soft, golden sand (which by the way can get very hot during the summer) and warm, tropical water. The waters are shark netted and life guards are working on the beach daily, making it a safe beach and place to swim in for the whole family. The beach is facilitated with shower and changing facilities.
When you have soaked up all the sun after a long day on the beach and ready to relax and enjoy some good food, try the variety of superb restaurants and bars within walking distance of the beach.
Be warned that South Beach can get extremely overcrowded during the South African holiday months so it is best to get there early. But if you enjoy a vibey summer amongst hundreds of other holidaymakers, this is the beach holiday destination for you!
North Beach
Within walking distance of South Beach and not so big, North Beach is also very popular and has the same characteristics and facilities as South Beach; golden sand, daily lifeguard service, shark netting, shower and changing facilities as well as restaurants along the walkway. There is also a large public swimming pool opposite the beach. North Beach hosts the annual, international surfing competition previously known as the Gunston 500, now called the Vodacom Challenge.
Addington Beach
Situated in front of the Addington Hospital, this beach is not so big or as popular as North and South Beach but offers the same characteristics, facilities, restaurants and bars along the beach. Addington Beach’s water temperature is swim-friendly and the waters are made safety friendly through shark netting. If you are looking for a South or North Beach but without the over-crowdedness this is the beach for you.
We both agree that a beach holiday wouldn’t be a beach holiday if not accompanied by accommodation that overlooks the beach. No. 5 Casa Playa is a luxurious, self-catering apartment situated on one of Kwazulu-Natal’s most sought after beach holiday destinations, Umhlanga Rocks’ main beach. It is walking distance to the beach, restaurants, shops, hair and beauty salons amongst many other things.
