Umhlanga is a popular holiday destination for South Africa’s great December break. Is it a wonder, though, as Umhlanga boasts the most glorious weather, a picturesque beach, and a paved promenade which stretches for over 3 km? During December, the buzz goes up a notch during the Umhlanga Summer Festival which draws over 600 000 visitors to the beach.
Beach Carnival
Aimed at providing good, clean fun for the whole family, the festival attracts both holiday makers and locals alike. The Umhlanga Summer Festival is a beach carnival designed to appeal to diverse market. Interactive and spectator events consist of beach, water sport and land activities, and entertainment. Over the last eleven years, favourites have included games such as Tug Of War, Face Painting, Treasure Hunts, Dance offs, Promenade Family Walks and more.
Active Fun in The Sun
With an emphasis on being active, the festival plays host to a trail run as well. 2016 saw about 500 runners on the course – adding to the magnificent atmosphere. The race starts and finishes at the Millennium Stage at the Umhlanga Main Beach. Runners have described the gruelling 18 km route as having “the perfect combination of stunning surrounds and challenging tracks.”
