Durban hosts the 21st International AIDS Conference

The Long Walk to Prevention

Although the letters “HIV” and “AIDS” still evoke feelings of dread and dismay, South Africa has made positive strides in managing the HIV and AIDS epidemic since the end of 2008.

This is in part due to the collaboration of like-minded people who are committed to ending the pandemic. This year, the Durban International Convention Centre is hosting the 21st International AIDS Conference from 18 – 22 July 2016.

Visitors from more than 180 countries – including researchers, clinicians, policy and programme planners, and public health and community practitioners – will be descending on Durban to work on all fronts of the global response to AIDS.

The International AIDS Conference 2016 is expected to convene over 18,000 delegates from around the world, including up to 1,000 journalists. It is a chance to assess where we are, evaluate recent scientific developments and lessons learnt, and collectively chart a course forward.

This premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV is convened by five permanent partners: IAS, Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+), The International Community of Women with HIV/AIDS (ICW), International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO) and UNAIDS in association with international and South African scientific and civil society partners.

The AIDS 2016 programme will present new scientific knowledge and offer many opportunities for structured dialogue on the major issues facing the global response to HIV. A variety of session types – from abstract-driven presentations to symposia, bridging and plenary sessions – will meet the needs of various participants. Other related activities, including the Global Village, satellite symposia, the exhibition and affiliated independent events, will contribute to an exceptional opportunity for professional development and networking.

Because the International AIDS Conference is the largest conference on any global health or development issue, you need to book your accommodation with us as soon as possible. A mere 17km from the Durban ICC, Casa Playa offers self-catering accommodation in Umhlanga.
